Chae Sung-Pil
Chae Sung-Pil interweaves the philosophy and techniques of Asian artistic traditions with the language of contemporary Western abstraction. Nature is not only his subject but also his medium—he is known for using soil and sand as paint. He collects earth from around the world while traveling, and later in his studio he filters, dilutes and mixes it with glue. He then applies this organic pigment with a large brush or even by pouring the mixture directly onto the canvas, the resulting drips and splatters recalling nature’s own fluctuation and unpredictability.
Chae is a South Korean artist born in 1972 who now lives and works in Paris, France. He holds an MA and BA from Seoul National University and a second Masters degree from the Université de Rennes, and he is currently a doctoral candidate for Plastic Arts at the Université de Paris. He is one of Korea’s most established artists, having had solo exhibitions throughout France, South Korea and China. Chae has won the invited artist honor at the St- Grégoire Art Fair three times and the Grand Prix award at the Saint-Briac Art Fair in France.
