Anish Kapoor

Anish Kapoor is a prominent British-Indian artist working in large-scale abstract sculpture and public installation. Using raw materials like limestone, granite, dirt, concrete and vibrant natural pigments, Kapoor contemplates the poetic power of pure color and the existential theme of the void. His approach to sculpture is typically minimalist, demonstrated in his preference for monochrome palettes, reflective materials and negative space. In more recent works, he has begun incorporating industrial materials like PVC, fiberglass and steel.

Born in 1954 in Mumbai, Kapoor moved to London in the early 1970s, where he studied at the Hornsey College of Art and the Chelsea School of Art and Design. He began to achieve recognition after his work was included in the influential exhibition ‘New Sculpture’ at the Hayward Gallery in 1978, alongside several artists of the New British Sculpture movement such as Antony Gormley, Richard Deacon, Shirazeh Houshiary, Alison Wilding and Bill Woodrow. This cohort rejected the austerity of Minimalism, instead injecting sculpture with new technology and greater cultural diversity. Since then, Kapoor has made public sculptures internationally and become one of the most well-known contemporary artists. He represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1990 and was awarded the prestigious Turner Prize in 1991. He has also received numerous national distinctions, including knighthood from the British honours system and the Padma Bhushan from the Indian government.
